Some psychological presuppositions for development of chronic alcoholism

Guensberger, E.

The article refers to the psychogenesis of alcoholism some features of which are well-known, others, according to the author, however are not sufficiently taken into consideration. The problem requires a differentiation between symptomatic drinking in psychosis and that in neurosis. In psychopathics it is not a matter of symptomatic alcoholism but rather a constitutional splitting and it is not certain to what extend psychogenesis is involved here in. The analysis of psychological factors plays an important part at the development of alcoholism in normal individuals. Even if in such an analysis the individual factors be debatable and its statement in the individual case difficult, it is incontestable that the analysis presents not only a key to the understanding of the development of alcoholism but at the same time help s the preventive as well as therapeutical measures. Psychotherapy, which is always so much stressed in fighting of alcoholism, must therefore be based an such an analysis. The paper tries to point out the well-known psychological facts besides those features and experiences that belong to its unknown profile: namely its vulnerability and weak resistance, the lability of its self-confidence and its difficulties in establishing connecting links with people. These drinker’s peculiarities, result in unexpected and often tragic reactions the prevention of which accordingly belongs, to the tasks of the fight against alcoholism.
