Qualitative approach in the research of classification of cannabis intoxication experiences

Miovský, M. – Vacek, J. – Řehan, V.

This research of cannabis intoxication experiences represents an important substudy of the CANLO G project, and it is part of the research study supported by Grant Agency of Czech Republic (No. 406/02/1449). The substudy aims to describe and c1assify the phenomena connected with an acute intoxication experience by means of qualitative methods, i.e. to find a c1assification of experiences according to the qualities perceived by the users of these drugs. Therefore, the emphasis lies on the richness, intensity and character of experiences rather than on their frequency. This origina1 study uses semistructured interviews, focus groups and involved monitoring. The study involved 17 users (12 males and 5 females). They were 19 – 27 years old. They are relatively regular marijuana users who have used it for 4.5 years on the average. The main result consists of three identified and thoroughly described types of marijuana “highs”: the laughs, thoughtfulness and the lows. According to the participants, these three types are associated with relatively stable groups of experience phenomena that have been repeatedly reported by users.
