Maierová, E. – Doležalová, K. – Hrubý, L. C.

Background: Life values and purpose of life are two closely interrelated concepts. They are an important aspect in treatment of substance abuse, and they can represent the core aspect of work in a contact centre. Objectives: Primary goal was to establish and map main values and meaning of life of clients from contact centre Olomouc. Secondary objective was to determine blind spots in provided services to clients based upon results from primary goal. Sample: The research sample consisted from 2 groups. First group contained 13 clients of contact centre, all active users of crystal meth, and the second group was formed by three workers of the contact centre. Methods: Portrait Values Questionnaire, Logo Test questionnaire, semi-structured interview. Results: Most participants see universalism and stimulation as the highest values. Most participants also do not fully experience purpose in their lives and they demonstrate signs of existential frustration. They try to improve their situation with the help of contact workers, who have a good understanding of their clients’ life situation. In many cases, however, for multiple reasons, the clients deny that the workers have ever addressed their life situation. Services offered in the contact centre correspond to the clients’ needs, and the clients do use them. Nevertheless, the clients do not use the term key worker, and they prefer the name of the worker, who works with them. Conclusion: The results can provide additional information about the target group and their needs. The findings suggest that substance often is not an end goal in itself, but rather a means how to manage a dire situation. The findings can also improve work in contact centres and help adjust the way services are offered.
