Pathological gambling

Patarák, M.

Pathological gambling is a disorder characterized by a preoccupation with gambling and the excitement that gambling provideswith increasing risks. The disorder consists of frequent, repeated episodes of gambling that dominate the patient’s life to the detriment of social, occupational, material, and family values and commitments. Pathological gamblers are unable to cut back on their gambling, despite the fact that it may lead them to lie, steal, or lose a significant relationship, job, or educational opportunity. Although pathological gambling is classified among habit and impulse disorders, it is increasingly regarded as a behavioral, non-chemical or non-substance addiction.
