First experiences with short-time use of naltrexone in outpatient treatment of alcohol dependence

Lúčna, S.

The paper presents our first experiences with naltrexone in outpatient addiction treatment. Naltrexone is a competitive antagonist of opioid receptors. It helps to reduce the alcohol consumption, intensity of craving (especially the „liking“ part of craving) and reward in alcohol dependent patients. Our sample consists of 12 patients in outpatient addiction treatment. Naltrexone was administered from 1 to 9 months. The efficacy of naltrexone in treatment of craving is illustrated in two mini-cases. The results show that naltrexone is important part of the complex management of alcoholism.

Key words: alcohol addiction – outpatient treatment – craving – naltrexone
