Caffeine – a new means of suicide

Caffeine is a natural xanthic alkaloid, which acts as a stimulant of the central nervous system. Intentional or accidental abuse of caffeine caused by excessive consumption of energy drinks and caffeine-containing beverages is relatively frequent. Fatalities due to caffeine intoxication, by contrast, are described relatively rare in literature. In recent years, we encounter more frequent cases where the caffeine is ingested in suicidal intent. The aim of this work is to demonstrate a fatal case of 26-year-old man who intentionally ingested pure caffeine powder. The concentration of caffeine detected in blood by toxicological examination after the autopsy was three times higher than lethal concentrations referred in the scientific literature.

Key words: caffeine – lethal intoxication – autopsy – toxicological analysis – suicide
