Urgent hospitalizations due to alcohol intoxication

Janík, P. – Vašečková, B.

Psychiatrists are dealing with cases of alcohol intoxication on everyday basis. Due to canceling of “alcohol intoxication emergency rooms” represent these patients a specific group that are observed or hospitalized in psychiatric departments and clinics. The aim of the study was to specify the category of patients with acute alcohol intoxication among all outpatients investigated in Psychiatric Clinic of University Hospital and Medical Faculty in terms of amount, severity of intoxication and the reason for psychiatric investigation. We collect the data of all outpatients which were investigated because of behavioral disturbances due to alcohol intoxication in the period of 3 moths (February till April 2012). Data were collected from all the outpatient investigations (in time of working hours and emergency night shifts as well). Need for assistance of ambulance or police by the transport, realized investigation other than psychiatric, administration of medication and final outcome were monitored. From 2381 examined patients, 114 were involved in the study (5 % of all outpatient investigations and 30 % of all emergency shifts). Most common reasons for psychiatric investigation were behavioral disturbances, aggressiveness and suicidal threats during intoxication. Assistance of ambulance or police were needed in most of the cases. The need for continuation of medical care was in more than half of all investigated patients, 27 % of patients were observed at the clinic to sober and 34 % were admitted to hospital. The results illustrate high rate of patients investigated because of alcohol intoxication mainly in the emergency shifts. Management of these cases is cost demanding. High amount of aggressiveness without adequate technical and personal equipment and insufficient legal protection have to be in mind. This reveals the necessity of reopening “alcohol intoxication emergency rooms” in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
