New drugs. Part 2 – Salvia divinorum

Salvia divinorum is a plant originally used by the Mazatecs of Oaxaca, Mexico in spiritual rituals. The plant is widely cultivated in many countries in the US, Central America and Europe and is consumed for its ability to produce psychoactive effects similar to hallucinogenic drugs. Salvinorin A, the main psycho active component of salvia divinorum is a structurally unique diterpenoid, a selective and potent kappa-opioid receptors (KOR) agonist. Despite its widespread internet availability, little is known regarding the epidemiology, compounďs long-term health effects, and addiction liability. The purpose of this article is familiarize drug addiction specialists with this emerging psychoactive substance.
