Is there a possibility to be a square and an alcoholic at the same time?

Valková, I. – Okruhlica, Ľ.

Our research was stimulated by the existence of common assumption in the society, that person with alcohol dependence is automatically characterized as having the elements of the antisocial behaviour, which leads to the prejudices and stigmatizes the individuals. Aim of the study was to find out, if there is any clinical evidence for the existence of the people with alcohol dependence syndrome without signs of the anti social behaviour, during some stages, or during the whole course of the disease. Patients and Methods: We have conducted the quantitative analysis using VAST questionnaire, as well as content analysis of the selected case histories, in the sample of 128 patients (70.3 % males, 29.7 % females; average age 45 (SD ± 11.5) from CPLDZ Bratislava. Results: 21.9 % of the patients did not reveal any of the signs of the antisocial behaviour, which were studied by us during the whole life. We did not find them among 32.0 % of the patients in the period of the last five years of active dependence, which were preceding current treatment. The signs of antisocial behaviour were not manifested by 57.8 % of them during their more distant past. Conclusions: Our hypotheses have been supported by both methodological approaches we have used. Unconditional association of dependence on a1cohol with the antisocial behaviour seems to be not based on the scientific evidence and so is professionally unacceptable.
