Experiences of university students at selected faculties with psychoactive substances

Kolibáš, E. – Novotný, V. – Turček, M.

We present the results of our survey in a sample of 842 university students at 3 different sites in Bratislava (Faculty of Medicine – Comenius University, Faculty of Philosophy – Comenius University, Faculty of Civil Engineering – Slovak University of Technology). The most frequent used illicit drug is marijuana. In our sample of university students, 48.5 % of men and 29.9 % of women have had at least one experience with this drug. Experiences with other illicit substances such as opioids, psychostimulants or hallucinogens are less common. The most frequent used legal substances were caffeine drinks (black coffee), alcohol and tobacco. The prevalence rates of regular use of these drugs are unfavourable, too. 27.4 % of men and 8.4 % of women are regular users of alcohol. There are 18.1 % of men and 10.1 % of women who regularly smoke tobacco. We also present the differences between men and women, as well as between the faculties. Because of relatively smaller numbers of respondents (Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Civil Engineering) we consider our results provisional.
