The frequent co-occurrence of drug abuse and dependence with schizophrenia necessitates that clinicians are able to recognize its presence in people with this disabling mental illness. Simple screening instruments allow the quick identification of patients who may have problem s with drug abuse. This article reviews tools devised for identifying and evaluating substance use among individuals with schizophrenia.
